Tips for Painting High Walls

Painting high walls inside a home is a project some homeowners avoid doing themselves, but it's actually quite easy if you use the right tools and equipment.

  1. Cull the Correct Equipment
  2. Paint the Ceilings Before the Walls
  3. Select the Best Paint Finish
  4. Repair Drywall and Tape Baseboard
  5. Cut-in the Ceiling Line
  6. Ringlet the Paint Correctly
  7. Consider an Extension Ladder Alternative

one. Choose the Right Equipment

An aluminum, 24-foot extension ladder is suitable for painting well-nigh two-story walls in a home. Aluminum is much lighter than fiberglass, making it safer and easier to maneuver inside the house. For nigh loftier walls in a chamber, a 16-foot extension ladder is ideal.

2. Paint the Ceiling Earlier the Walls

Skip this office if you lot aren't painting the ceiling. Simply if yous are, always paint the ceiling earlier y'all paint the walls. This way it won't affair if you drip a piffling pigment on the walls in the process. If you lot were to paint the walls get-go, and the ceiling concluding, you would have to protect the walls with plastic and also brush in the ceiling paint upside down to the wall edges.

3. Select the Best Paint Finish

There isn't necessarily a correct or wrong finish for big walls inside a domicile, but I don't recommend overly shiny paints. Personally, I would avoid semi-gloss or gloss. I have painted high walls in many homes and either flat (non-shiny) or eggshell (shiny) looks fine. It's a personal preference, but practise consider the electric current condition of the drywall as one of the determining factors. If you can see the joints in the drywall, nail pops, or uneven areas, shiny paint will highlight those issues even more- particularly if the room is well lit.

Choose a flat paint to dull the surface and draw less attending to imperfections on a poor drywall job. The only downside to apartment paint is that it doesn't always clean well because it isn't very smooth. The downside to eggshell is that sometimes it shows lap marks from the pigment roller after the pigment is dry, but that can exist prevented past using a premium interior paint and rolling the paint correctly.

four. Repair Drywall and Tape Baseboard

Fill blast holes and brand whatsoever drywall repairs before painting. I like to sand the walls before I paint, using a metal sanding head attached to a painting pole. Sanding the walls files down bumps and removes roller hairs in the existing paint cease. It makes the walls prissy and smooth. Record off the top of the baseboard with blueish tape and remove outlet covers.

If you're painting the ceiling, too, then it's best to do that before you start on the walls.

If yous're painting the ceiling, too, then it's best to do that before you starting time on the walls.

five. Cut-in the Ceiling Line

Before you roll any paint onto the walls, consummate all of the castor work kickoff, using an extension ladder. This office takes the longest because of the ladder work involved- but y'all tin can put the ladder away after, because the pigment rolling is done from the ground using a pole.

Information technology will probably accept 2 coats with the castor, unless you're painting a color that's similar to the existing paint. Two coats always looks all-time, though. If you don't accept a steady paw with the pigment castor, you can resort to using blue record, but it will take a lot longer to insert the tape into the corners, and record doesn't always leave a straight line, either.

Step-by-Step Process

  1. To go on the flooring protected from dripping pigment, place drop cloths underneath the ladder. Practice NOT fix upward the ladder with the anxiety directly on top of a drop cloth, or the ladder could slide across the flooring when yous're on it. E'er keep the ladder anxiety on the bare floor itself.
  2. Pour a little paint into a make clean empty gallon can.
  3. Snap a bucket hook onto the handle of the can and employ it to hook the can to the peak of the ladder afterwards you climb upward. The tin takes up less space than a big bucket, and you tin can leave it fastened to the ladder and so you lot won't have both easily total while painting with the brush.
  4. Set upwards the ladder at one side of the room and work towards the other side.
  5. Use a three-inch paint brush to cutting-in the peak of the high walls. A wider 3-inch brush holds more pigment and will make the chore become a little faster. I like to exit a iii" to four" strip of paint at the wall acme when cut-in, so information technology'southward easier to reach with the paint roller.

6. Roll the Paint Correctly

Now comes the fun part: rolling the paint onto the walls. The good news is that y'all won't demand the ladder anymore. Head down to the paint store and buy a large painting pole. In some cases, a 4- to viii-pes pole will be long enough to reach the elevation of high walls if you stand on a stepladder. You tin can also buy a longer 8- to 12-foot painting pole, simply in many cases the iv to 8 pole is long enough and easier to piece of work with.

Prep and Supplies

  • Make sure all of the floors are protected with drop cloths and the walls are repaired and sanded.
  • For eggshell (shiny) pigment, use a ane/ii" nap pigment roller, which produces smaller stipple marks on the wall. A thicker roller, such as 3/4" nap, holds more than paint, but the roller stipple at the lesser of the walls will exist noticeably heavy at heart level if you're using a shiny paint finish.
  • For flat (non-shiny) pigment, a 3/4" nap roller is fine.

How to Utilise the Paint

When rolling pigment onto high walls in a foyer, or whatever other room inside a dwelling, get-go at the summit and work your way down, just merely work in sections; don't skip around.

Showtime at i side of the wall and work towards the other side for an even end. If you're painting two coats on the walls, the beginning glaze doesn't have to be rolled in a perfect manner, as far every bit management goes, simply the 2d coat must be rolled evenly, in one direction, to avoid seeing roller marks later on it dries.

For eggshell, or satin paint, always roll the paint evenly from the summit all the way down to the bottom. Avoid rolling half the wall commencement and the 2d one-half last. If you paint high walls that style, you lot will see roller marks where the two sections overlap in the middle. Information technology won't exist as noticeable with flat paint, merely it will stand out a lot with eggshell paint. Ever roll from top to lesser and don't stop the roller in the center of the wall.

7. Consider an Extension Ladder Alternative

Scared of heights? In that location is one solution, only it takes more than time and doesn't always produce the best results. You can use a brush extender to cut-in high walls from the ground. A brush extender is a small metal adapter that screws onto the end of a painting pole. Y'all insert the pigment brush handle into the end of it.

If you lot don't accept whatever experience with a castor extender, it does accept some practise, peculiarly if you lot're already bad at cut-in straight lines at ceilings. A castor extender is really useful for cut-in tricky walls in places where it's most impossible to employ an extension ladder. The downside is that if yous mess information technology up and get pigment on the ceiling, you will accept to set up it or alive with information technology. Although it takes some physical effort, using an extension ladder really is the best way to get the job done right.
